OK so it's not the best 'hare' shot that you'll ever see, but it's the best one that I've ever taken. Lost track of the number of times that I've seen the tail running away from me before I've got the camera ready, so this is it - don't they have lovely eyes! This one was trying very hard to hide from me but he just couldn't get low enough :-) Seconds later he scarpered off.

The green pheasant, also known as the Japanese green pheasant, is an omnivorous bird native to the Japanese archipelago, to which it is endemic. Some taxonomic authorities consider it a subspecies of the common pheasant, Phasianus colchicus. It is the national bird of Japan.
