• It’s a good plugin, but incredibly frustrating, especially if you have to set it up in four languages, with about thirty cookies, and for European countries, like I do. First of all, when you add a new translation language, all the fields are empty. So I don’t really see the point of the AI translation because, if the fields are empty, there’s nothing to translate. It would have been much simpler and faster if the fields were already filled in with English by default. Next comes the part where you have to set up the cookies. I knew this was a manual process, so it took me about an hour to identify each one and assign the correct settings. Finally, the moment came when I gave up: After the languages and the cookies, it’s time to select the countries. Here, you have to choose one country at a time, and for each country, you have to choose the regions to include, as well as the “Default consent states” (7 switches). So, for each country, you have to open the window, search for the country in the dropdown list, select the regions or states (though there is a “select all” button), click OK, then edit the country to activate the switches you want… Honestly, I like to support open source, but really, wasn’t there a way to simplify this whole process? In short, having run out of patience, I uninstalled it and opted for another, less time-consuming plugin. Obviously, this review reflects my experience and is therefore just one opinion. Pressidium Cookie Consent will suit those who want total and meticulous control and are willing to devote time to it. But for me, after two hours of configuration, I didn’t have the energy to continue. Still, it’s a good plugin, and you can tell the developers put a lot of care into creating it. It’s just too time-consuming for me.
EDIT: I hadn’t realized you don’t actually have to select regions when adding a country (the prominent “Select all” button kind of led me to believe otherwise). You can just pick the country and add it as-is, which is much better. So in the end, I’m keeping the plugin: I asked Claude Opus to edit the JSON export I had saved and add the 32 EEA countries for me, then re-imported it. Worked like a charm. That said, the UX issues I mentioned still stand IMHO.

Thank you for the detailed and honest review (and also for updating it after discovering that regions don’t need to be selected manually). We genuinely appreciate that.

A few points we’d like to clarify:

    • The plugin ships with English fields already populated by default. The AI translation feature then uses those existing values (including your own edits) into the target language using the AI provider/model you’ve selected. So even if the fields appear empty when adding a new language, they can still be translated using the values from the default language.
    • Manual cookie configuration is indeed time-consuming, and I agree it’s one of the biggest pain points at the moment. We do have an automated cookie scanning feature planned in our roadmap (GitHub issue #141), although we can’t provide an ETA yet.
    • Countries are configured separately because this feature is closely tied to Google Consent Mode (GCM) requirements. As you pointed out, selecting regions is optional unless you specifically need to target only certain areas within a country, not when adding the entire country itself. That said, your comments about the UX are completely fair, and we’ll definitely consider ways to make the process more intuitive.

By the way, the JSON export → Claude → import was honestly a pretty creative workaround to speed up the setup process.

We’re actively listening to this type of feedback and always looking for ways to improve the overall experience, while still maintaining the flexibility and level of control the plugin provides.

Thanks again for giving the plugin another shot, even if the setup process felt overwhelming. That means a lot.
