Onboarding to Documentation team

Here is some quick info you need in order to start contributing to Documentation team.

Accounts:

Places:

  • Blog – for meeting agendas and summaries (and anything related to Docs team).
  • Slack channel #docs – where meetings are happening (and all communication regarding the team itself).
  • GitHub repository – where issues for all documentation are reported, discussed and worked on.
  • Handbook – how to contribute to the Documentation team (it’s a bit out of date).
  • Style guide – for how to write WordPress documentation.

Meetings (alternating every week) on Tuesdays at 2PM UTC:

  • Regular meeting with agenda published on our blog.
  • Issues triage where we discuss issues from the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Live onboarding sessions

We recorded onboarding sessions for everyone interested in getting started with the Documentation team. We know that our “Getting started” documentation is out of date and getting involved can be very confusing and frustrating so we hope to ease the process with these sessions.

Updates

7.0 Release updates

  • Documentation Progress: Content updates for WordPress 7.0 are underway. @kjoyner and @awetz583, have been added as noteworthy contributors for this release and will continue drafting content for review.
  • What’s New Post: @estelaris is working on a public post highlighting the key changes in the 7.0 release.
    • Versions Documentation: The WordPress Versions documentation page has been reordered (from newest to oldest) and split into two separate pages for easier editing and readability.
    • Advanced Settings Page: A new Advanced Settings page is being created. Most blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. article pages will need to be updated to link to this new resource (see Issue #2287).

WordCamp Europe (WCEU)

  • Event Details: WCEU Contributor Day is taking place on June 4, 2026. @estelaris and @milana_cap will be on-site to mentor and guide contributors.
  • Available Tasks: There are plenty of specific open issues ready for contributors.
  • Good First Issue: A great entry-level task for new contributors will be auditing the WordPress dashboard to map out where documentation links currently exist and brainstorm ways to improve navigation.

Documentation structure improvement proposals

@estelaris discussed a broader initiative to improve overall documentation structure. Key discussion points included:

  • Editor Integration: Exploring the ability to link directly from the WordPress editor UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. to specific block documentation.
  • Dashboard Links: Providing clear internal links to DevHub, HelpHub, and Learn WordPress sites from within the WordPress admin dashboard.
  • FAQ Revamp: Redesigning and updating the current FAQ section.
  • Support vs. Documentation: The team addressed a common user confusion where documentation forms are mistaken for human support channels. Discussion focused on updating the copy to clearly distinguish static documentation from human help resources (like the support forums).

Profile Badges & Contributor Pathways

  • Contribution Badges: @estelaris has awarded profile badges to contributors from recent contributor days and WordCamp Asia. The team noted the new profile page layout, which now displays the specific dates badges were awarded.
  • Pathways Updates:  @supernovia reported that @marutim is currently testing the File a Documentation Issue pathway and providing feedback.
    • @clk87 is actively working on pathways and other documentation issues asynchronously due to timezone differences.

Handbook Translation Updates

  • Spanish Translation Review: @estelaris is updating the handbook based on recent work by a WP Credits student. After translating the material to Spanish and back-translating to English, the team identified several areas for phrasing and clarity improvements.

Standardizing Block Pages

The team is focusing on a systematic, content-first approach to update block documentation and reduce redundancy.

  • Consolidation: @kjoyner identified repetitive settings across various block documents. @estelaris confirmed the team is creating standardized “Advanced Settings” pages to consolidate these.
  • Toolbar Settings: @kjoyner will conduct a comprehensive review of repeated settings and open a proposal issue to consolidate common block toolbar documentation.
  • How to Propose Changes:
    • Create one issue focusing exclusively on one setting.
    • Include a checklist of all the block articles that need to be updated.

Tracking GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Releases

  • CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. Focus Only: @estelaris proposed that when tracking Gutenberg releases for upcoming block article updates, the team should focus strictly on existing core blocks and avoid documenting experimental features.
  • Version Mapping: To check which Gutenberg versions map to specific WP Core releases, contributors should reference the Block Editor Handbook Contributor Guide.
  • Testing Tip: @milana_cap suggested using WordPress Playground as a fast, frictionless way to verify current block features and ensure documentation accuracy.

Training presentation: WP Latin America

@estelaris is designing a documentation training meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. tailored for Latin American communities.

  • Format: Presentation slides are being created in both English and Spanish, with the ultimate goal of publishing the recording to WP.tv.
  • Content Coverage:
    • Types of documentation in WP.org
    • The role and scope of the documentation team
    • Overview of HelpHub/DevHub
    • Docs issue workflow – from creation to solution

WordPress Documentation Team Closes 200+ Issues — and Needs Your Help

The documentation team needs help, especially from coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., themes, and support contributors. As part of an overhaul, the Documentation Team has triaged and labeled nearly 800 issues in the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Many of the open issues belong to your teams. Find your area below, then:

  • Close stale issues that are no longer relevant, or comment “Close this” if you don’t have access
  • Comment with corrections or updated information when you spot something wrong
  • If possible, draft doc changes and comment with markdown or a link to your draft

If you have permissions to close issues or update docs directly, even better. If not, your comments are exactly what’s needed to help the docs team take action.

Here are the open issues by area:

7.0 Documentation

View the 7.0 Documentation Project board in Github

@estelaris created a Github issue for Resources for 7.0

Changes to existing documents will be drafted in Gitlab issues. For new features, we can create new pages ahead of time if we leave them in draft.

New blocks in 7.0 that will need new documentation pages:

  • Breadcrumbs blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.

@aialvi will be working on adding updates to issues identified in GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Blocks articles overhaul project

View the Blocks articles overhaul Project board in Github

@estelaris added additional blocks to the Backlog for documentation changes and to close old issues in the Documentation Issue Tracker.

Contributors can continue to work on the cleanup tasks while we are waiting for 7.0 to be released.

@awetz583 will continue updating existing blocks including the Cover block.

It would be nice to have a full list of which blocks exist in the block editor. We have access to the block code in GitHub but not all of the blocks are currently active and not all are user-facing.

@estelaris continues work on the Block overhaul triage Spreadsheet

Documentation in some of the sections in the spreadsheet such as WP Overview @estelaris and @milana_cap will update due to access and background in the project. @estelaris has access to edit the tooltips for keywords that are driven by the glossaries.

Dev Hub Issues

The documentation team needs Help closing DevHub issues. Please close anything related to missing documentation that was created when the parser was run.

Updates

Blocks articles overhaul

  • @estelaris compiled open issues related to blocks and features into a spreadsheet for the Blocks Overhaul Project. She finished labeling, reviewing the 26 pages of issues in GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. • @awetz583 is working on updates to the Buttons Block page.
  • @supernovia made changes to the Docs Handbook.

Issue label discussion

The team discussed removing the automatic “to-do” label on new issues in Github, as it did not provide value. The label process is currently outlined on the Documentation issue tracker page.

Advanced Admin & DevHub issue tracking planning

@estelaris discussed the need for someone to focus on the DevHub and Advanced Admin areas.

  • If a new page is requested and it now exists > close ticket
  • If a broken/missing link is reported > update link and close ticket
  • If a code review is requested > check if a solution has been provided. If not, add solution to ticket, test if you can and create PR for Advanced Admin.
