Wide GitHub Logo

Wide GitHub

Wide GitHub is a browser extension that makes GitHub’s layout wide, enhancing readability, reducing vertical scrolling, and improving accessibility.

It works on GitHub, private Gists, GitHub Enterprise, and custom TLDs (Firefox 127+ and Chrome Manifest V3 supported).

Get it on Firefox Add-ons
Get it on Chrome Web Store

Features

  • Makes GitHub's layout wide and accessible.
  • Supports custom domains (e.g. GitHub Enterprise).
  • Toggle on/off with a single click.
  • Syncs settings across devices (Firefox Sync / Chrome Sync).
  • Handles SPA navigation and tab switches.
  • Easy preferences and URLs management via settings popup.

Installation

Firefox

  1. Visit Wide GitHub for Firefox
  2. Click "Add to Firefox"
  3. Confirm the installation

Chrome

  1. Visit Wide GitHub for Chrome
  2. Click "Add to Chrome"
  3. Confirm the installation

Usage

  1. Click the extension icon in your browser's toolbar
  2. Toggle the switch to enable/disable the wide layout
  3. Add custom domains in the popup if needed

Custom Domains

You can add custom domains where you want the wide layout to be applied:

  1. Click the extension icon
  2. Enter the domain in the input field (e.g., git.mycompany.com)
  3. Click "Add" or press Enter
  4. Confirm the browser's permission request for that domain

Access to each custom domain is optional and is requested only when you add it; removing a domain from the list also revokes the permission. If the browser closes the popup to show the permission request, just reopen it: the domain is already in the list. If a domain shows a ⚠ button (e.g. after an update, a declined permission, or a settings sync to a new device), click it to grant the permission again.

The extension will automatically handle:

  • Subdomains (e.g., docs.github.com)
  • WWW redirects (e.g., www.github.com)
  • Protocol changes (http/https)

Development

All source code is in the src/ folder and is shared between Chrome and Firefox builds.
Manifest files are separate for each browser.

Setup

If you just cloned the repository, make the build scripts executable:

chmod +x build.sh package.sh

Build

To build the extension for both browsers:

./build.sh

This will generate the folders dist/firefox and dist/chrome with the ready-to-use extension files.

Package

To create ZIP files for release (excluding system and dev files):

./package.sh

This will create wide-github-firefox.zip and wide-github-chrome.zip in the project root, ready for upload to the stores.

Changelog

3.5.0

  • Reworked the permissions model: the extension no longer requests access to all websites at install time. Access to custom domains is now optional and requested only when you add a domain, and is revoked when the domain is removed.
  • Custom domains now activate immediately on already-open tabs, without requiring a page reload.
  • Popup: added a ⚠ button to re-grant a missing domain permission (e.g. after an update or syncing settings to a new device).
  • Popup: the current-domain section is now shown only when the site is not yet supported. Also improved accessibility (keyboard focus and ARIA labels) and dark mode contrast.
  • Fixed domain-matching false positives (e.g. notgithub.com no longer matches *.github.com).
  • Fixed the flicker-prevention CSS, which was not being applied, and a MutationObserver stacking issue.
  • Performance: throttled layout updates and removed dead code. Custom domains now require Firefox 127+.

3.4.0

  • Fixed PR discussion content wrapper (Issue 40, thanks to @e1four15f).
