I think a better solution would be to wait until matplotlib have refactored the test utilities to be framework independent, then include them in a compat sub-package here for a little until Matplotlib 2.1 has been out for a while. |

This is a little hacky but avoids depending on nose (which isn't used anyway).
I've also done a PR to matplotlib to avoid this altogether (matplotlib/matplotlib#6923), but we need to be compatible with older matplotlib versions so we can't avoid it.
