🌍 What does it take to make climate action work for everyone? 💡 For Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, Mayor of #Malmo, the answer is clear: the green transition must be inclusive, affordable and rooted in people’s daily lives. Under her leadership, Malmo has become a leading example of people-centred climate action - from sustainable city planning and citizen engagement to the Malmo Commitment, which brings cities together to make the transition just, fair and equitable. ➡️ The Mayor's message is simple: if climate action is not affordable, it is not sustainable. Through partnerships with other cities - including work on the planned Oresund Metro linking Malmo and Copenhagen - she is showing how mayors can drive systemic change while keeping social justice at the centre. ✨ Shortlisted for the ‘City Heroes’ award at the #EurocitiesAwards2026, Mayor Stjernfeldt Jammeh is showing why city leaders are essential to Europe’s climate future. 🔗 Read her story 👉 https://lnkd.in/evYuqBy7 📅 The award winners will be announced at the Eurocities Annual Conference in Utrecht, 8–10 June. What happens when cities put equity at the center of climate action? Over the past three years, the INCLU:DE project explored how local governments can design climate initiatives that are not only effective, but also socially just and inclusive. Led by ICLEI and supported by Stiftung Mercator, the project brought together five German cities, Bonn, Essen, Dortmund, Heidelberg, and Ludwigsburg, to test practical approaches to make climate action more inclusive, practical, and fair. Their experiences show that when barriers are removed and climate programs are made more accessible, everyone gains: From stronger uptake of climate-friendly solutions to more resilient and trusted local governance. Through balcony solar subsidy programs and accessible mobility initiatives, INCLU:DE demonstrated that co-benefits of climate-friendly solutions and technologies have the potential to alleviate burdens on lower-income or disadvantaged communities, such as reducing electricity costs and improving public health. This work would not have been possible without the dedication of our #ICLEI colleagues, the commitment of the INCLU:DE cities, the support of Stiftung Mercator GmbH, and the strong partnerships we built throughout these years. As the project concludes, its lessons will continue helping cities place equity at the center of climate action. "We are now halfway through in the KMGBF implementation race. It is abundantly clear that we must do more and that we must act faster. Slow, incremental change is no longer a choice," writes Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the UN Biodiversity Secretariat in an open letter to mayors and governors. Read the full message via CitiesWithNature & RegionsWithNature ⬇️

This #BiodiversityDay, we are celebrating the subnational leaders who are acting locally for global impact. With more than half of the world's population living in urban areas, cities and regions play an essential role in shaping a nature-positive future. In an open letter to mayors and governors, Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the UN Biodiversity Secretariat, highlights this critical momentum: "The choices that cities and regions make daily ripple outward and can drive global transformation... Together, these thousands of local acts add up to real and measurable progress." As we look towards the first global review of collective progress at CBD COP 17 and the 9th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities this October, it is vital that whole-of-society endeavors are mapped and measured. Our CitiesWithNature and RegionsWithNature Action Platforms is doing just that, providing a place for cities and regions to measure their actions and impact. Housing is more than shelter. It is the foundation of equitable, resilient, and thriving communities. “Housing must therefore be recognized as a strategic pillar of the European urban agenda, and cities must be empowered as key actors within stronger multilevel governance,” calls Luísa Maria Neves Salgueiro, Mayor of Matosinhos, Portugal. In her editorial for ICLEI’s Equitable Development newsletter, Mayor Neves Salgueiro reflects on the urgent need to place housing at the center of urban policy, strengthen cooperation across levels of government, and ensure cities have the tools and resources to respond to growing social and territorial challenges.
