5 legendary races F1 stars love

Oscar, Kimi, George, Nico and Pierre tell us their faves.

It’s never been a better time to get into Formula One as a fan. New technical regulations for the 2026 season has forced teams to create all-new car designs, so it’s anybody’s guess as to who will now come out on top. If you’re a recent convert, there’s a stunning archive of legendary races from the sport’s history to catch up on.

Don’t just take our word for it: the App Store asked five F1 drivers what their favourite races of all time are. Check out their responses below, then head to the F1 TV app to watch each race (you’ll find them in the Archive section of the menu).

Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull hot on the heels of Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

George Russell

British Mercedes driver George Russell has competed in more than 100 Grands Prix to date, with nearly two dozen podiums and multiple race wins.

“My favourite race from F1 history is probably Brazil in 2012, the last race of the season. There was just so much going on and it seemed to be in Alonso’s favour, then it went to back to Vettel, and then the rain came in. Brazil always seems to throw up a good one.”

With Ayrton Senna’s car stalling at the start of the 1988 Japanese Grand Prix, it was Alain Prost who seemed to have the upper hand.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli

Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli drives for Mercedes and is the youngest driver ever to take a pole position.

“My fave, it’s a really tough question because there are many. I would say Suzuka in 1988 and Ayrton Senna’s drive. Senna didn’t have the best start and he fell back down the field, but he didn’t give up. He kept pushing, recovered and won the race – and eventually won the championship. I really liked that race because it shows that no matter what you should never give up until the chequered flag because you never know what’s gonna happen.“

A legendary overtake from Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren surprised Michael Schumacher during the late stages of the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix.

Nico Hulkenberg

German F1 veteran Nico Hulkenberg drives for Audi Revolut and has more than 200 Grands Prix – and one podium – under his belt.

“My favourite race from F1 history? Uh, tough question. So many to choose from... but I think it was 2000 in Spa, that infamous move from Hakkinen where he overtook Schumacher, and there was this guy on the Kemmel Straight in the middle. I was actually there with my dad – it was my first F1 race that I went to as a child. And we happened to sit on the Kemmel Straight and saw it all live. So that was a bit special.“

Sebastian Vettel still out in front in the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, where everyone had a hard, unusually long race due to the rain.

Oscar Piastri

The Australian Oscar Piastri drives for McLaren and ended up third in the 2025 driver standings.

“My favourite race from F1 history probably has to be the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. It was a pretty crazy race. A lot of rain, had a red flag in the middle, last lap lead change for the win. And the other crazy fact is I went to bed and the race was just starting in Australia and I woke up and the race was still going on. So it was one of the longest races in F1 history.”

A clash between F1 legends Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna led to chaos off-track at the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly

Pierre Gasly hails from France, drives for Alpine, has raced in more than 150 Grands Prix to date and has managed to reach the podium three times from a starting position of tenth or lower.

“My favourite race from F1 history... I’ll go with Suzuka in 1989. The battles between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost for me was such an iconic rivalry in our sport – probably the biggest and very unique. Prost is French, so we do have a connection. And Senna has always been one of the drivers I’ve most admired since I was a kid.”
