CATCH UP WITH A CLASSIC

Retro revival: Tetris

Stack ‘em up

This classic puzzler transcends videogames. It’s a genuine phenomenon.

So much so, it’s had one named after it: anyone repeating a pattern-based activity long enough that it dominates their thoughts and dreams is said to have experienced the “Tetris effect”.

It also holds the world record for being released on the highest number of different platforms, but it’s rarely felt as vibrant as it does here.

That earworm music is back in gloriously remixed form, while the classic block-dropping gameplay is largely unchanged in the main single-player mode – hey, you can’t fix perfection.

Aaargh we’re having a nightmare here. Must use that Hold feature better.

Nevertheless there are improvements. On iPhone and iPad, swipe controls make it easier than ever to make lines quickly. Slide the four-celled blocks, or Tetriminos, around the well to move them, tap to rotate and then swipe down to drop them in place.

Anyone who’s played Tetris will know the agony of leaving a gap and waiting for the right piece to come along, only for it to drop a few seconds too late. But with the handy Hold feature, you can swipe up to keep a piece back, switching it in at just the right moment.

If you want to go full retro you can – or keep the look clean and modern, it’s up to you.

That technique is vital in the brilliant competitive Tetris Royale mode, which pits you against up to 100 players online. Here, you’ll complete lines to send grey blocks to your opponents’ wells, while dealing with any that pop up in yours.

Fill them in yourself and you might be able to get your revenge. But do you clear lines quickly, or risk waiting for them to pile up before pulling off a succession of Tetrises? You’ll need to adapt your approach to suit the situation, making this one of the most gripping Tetris variants ever.

The competitive battle royale-style mode is arguably this game’s best new feature.

That alone would be reason enough to revisit this modern masterpiece, but there’s more besides. With Tetris Together, set up a game with friends for a bit of friendly competition, or take things more seriously with Tetris Primetime, where you can tune in each night to battle it out for glory and prizes. That’s the Tetris effect, all right.
